John grew up and resides in the San Francisco East Bay. He started playing guitar at age 14 after becoming obsessed with Mahavishnu Orchestra. In college he fixated on the music of Charlie Parker then Thelonious Monk. Jazz, free, rock, punk and classical inspire him. He played in a pianoless Monk cover band in San Francisco for several years. Harry Andrew (a graduate of New England Conservatory), Adam Levy (formerly an instructor at The New School, currently at USC) and the crew at Attila Zoller's Vermont jazz workshop, including Jim Hall, instructed and inspired John.
